Atal Tunnel is also said as Rohtang Tunnel. It is a highway tunnel that is built under the Rohtang Pass in the eastern region of Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas on the Leh-Manali Highway in Himachal Pradesh.

Atal Tunnel Rohtang
In 1960, Moravian Mission was the first to talk about the possibility of a tunnel through Rohtang Pass to reach Lahaul. It was Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru who discussed the ropeway to Rohtang Pass with local tribes. After a few deliberations and meetings, they decided the budget of the tunnel in the year 2000 of INR 500 Crore with an estimated completion time of seven years. Because of certain tree-felling issues, the project went on hold and the budget observed the hike of 900 Crore. AFCONS Infrastructure Limited and STRABAG AG of Austria were awarded this project in 2009.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on 25th December 2019, renamed the tunnel as Atal Tunnel.

Atal Tunnel Inauguration
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the most awaited Tunnel in Rohtang on 3rd October 2020. While inaugurating PM Modi enriched with his words. He specified it as the historic day because it was the dream of Atal Bihari Bajpai and a decade-long wait of people of Himachal Pradesh. He mentioned the tunnel will act as the lifeline for the two new Union Territories, namely Leh and Ladakh.

Atal Tunnel Length
The tunnel is 8800 meter, or 5.5 miles long. The tunnel is so strategically built that it will reduce the distance between Manali and Leh by 46 KM and the travel time by four to five hours. It is said to be the longest highway tunnel in the world. They built the tunnel with ultra-modern specifications in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas at an altitude of 3000 MTRs (10000 feet) from the main sea level.
The opening date of the Atal Tunnel will always hold a significant role in Indian History.

Atal Tunnel Temperature
As we all know, Manali has more of low temperature and if we talk about the famous Tunnel temperature, then from May to June the temperature varies from 25 to 30 degrees Celsius.
From December to January month – the temperature varies around -30 degrees to -20 degrees Celsius.
In snowfall, on Nov 26, 2020, Tunnel faced the heaviest snow with over 3 feet (90 CM) in the South portal and 40 cm in the North portals.

They have opened the famous Tunnel on February 21st, 2021, for the general tourist movement. Now tourists can traverse the tunnel. Prior permission is mandatory for both tourists and residents.
