The city is named after Sultan Ahmed Shah, who founded the city in 1411 A.D.

1. Kankaria Lake:

History of Sabarmati Ashram:

As Gandhiji has started satyagraha march to Dandi from here to protest the British salt law. When on 12th March 1930. 

He reached the Dandi with his many followers and declared that he would not return to ashram until India gets freedom but, after getting Independence on 15th August 1947, he died in January 1948 and he never returned to the ashram.

Gandhiji lived with his wife Kasturba from 1917-1930 in the ashram as it was an ideology to set India free. every person used to do his work by himself including Gandhiji.

Importance of Sabarmati Ashram:

At present day, Ashram has a museum named ‘Gandhi smarak sangrahalaya’ which includes many various kinds of paintings of Gandhiji and their life events. 

This Ashram contains hand-copied and photocopies of letters that were written by Gandhiji during his life. It has a library containing various books on Gandhiji. 

It has a Gandhiji cottage named ‘Hridaya gun‘ which consists of some of his relics.

The charkha used for spinning by Gandhiji is also kept there.

3. Sidi Sayed ki jali:

History:

It is a religious site built by Sidi Saiyyad in 1572 A.D. and also known as jali wali masjid.

He was the follower of the general army of the last sultan of Gujarat sultanate. He came to Gujarat from Yemen and served the sultan Mahmud- III.

Sidi Saiyad ki Jali’s Architecture:

This is the splendorous artistic example of a majestic tree intertwined with curved branches in a semicircle window. Two trees were interwoven with each other banyan tree and palm tree.

These windows are covered with a mesh that is famous for stone lattice-work. And the rear window is filled with square stone panels in geometrical designs.

The tree is believed to represent Kalpvruksh (banyan tree) in the Hindu religion according to mythology and knowing it by a wish-fulfilling tree and palm tree features it’s Islamic belief also.

4. Jama Masjid:

There were two minarets in the entrance, but it collapsed due to an earthquake in 1819. Now, only the lower portion remains.

Jhulta Minara height is about 34 meters and all of them are well balanced although it’s made of heavy stone materials. And there is a stair between two minarets which is in usable condition.

6. Dada Hari ki vav (stepwell):

The stepwell was built in 1485 A.D by Dhai harir who was the household lady of the Mahmud Begda according to some texts. Later it was named by ‘Dada Harir’ or ‘Dada Hari ki vav‘.

Dhai Hari was buried in this mosque and well include two different languages of texts, Sanskrit in South and Arabic on the north wall. This tomb is the backside of the vav.

It has octagonal planes with different levels, five-store deep and openings with 190 feet long.  And the stairs are spiral. Adalaj stepwell is also known as rudabai stepwell was built in 1498 A.D by queen Rudadevi in the memory of his husband Rana Veer Singh from the Vaghela dynasty.

History:

According to history, construction of this well has been started by Rana veer Singh for the conservation of water. But Muslim King Mahmud begda killed him and stop his wife Rudadevi to perform sati and asked to marry him.

But, she agreed on the condition that first, he would complete this stepwell. And Mehmud begda agreed and constructed the stepwell.

After completion of Well, he reminds Rudadevi to keep her promise. But Rudadevi after achieving her objective she kept engaged people in prayer and she ended her life by jumping in the well. 

The stepwell is five stories deep and its Well structure is carved with different beautiful designs.

Lothal is the ancient city of the Harappan civilization situated at the Bhogavo river, one of the tributaries of Sabarmati. 

It was the largest port and biggest dockyard during Indus valley civilization.

It was discovered around 1954. And excavated the site after a year by Archeological Survey of India (ASI) under the S.R.Rao

The government agency surveyed and preserved the ancient monuments of India. Once in history, there was a sea for transportation but today the water body is 19 km far away from it.

Excavation lasted for seven years from 1955-1962 A.D, and the museum was set up on the site in 1976. 

It is on the bank of the Sabarmati river which makes this river more attractive now. They found almost 5000 different items of that era but they put only 800 items to showcase publically. 

Nowadays there is a beautiful museum including different types of vechaar utensils of that time and many more.
